Nepal, 19th century, brass. The butter lamp is one the most evocative symbols of both Tibetan and Nepali culture. A brass butter lamp, such as in this example, is placed in front of every temple in Nepal and Tibet. Light is one of the “five sense offerings” to enlightened beings. At the front of each Lamp is either the husband or the wife. Both are bowing down with their hands together in prayer.
